The ATO has reminded individuals to be wary of popular myths about tax deductions available, such as a standard $300 deduction for work-related expenses, $150 for laundry, and 5000 km for car expenses.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson emphasised the necessary link between the expenses claimed and the income earned, and the ability to demonstrate to the ATO how the deductions were calculated. The ATO lists the top ten myths, including claims for makeup, television streaming subscriptions and home to work travel, as well as the belief that a tax agent will take responsibility for an individual’s deduction claim.
